ANNIE DINERMAN: *ANNIE'S HOMEPAGE

Homepage pic

Welcome to ANNIE DINERMAN’s Homepage

"I write because I am a singer-songwriter. If the category didn't already exist, I would have to create it for myself, because I don't fit in anywhere else. I have things to say and I aim to say them in my own open-handed way. And when I have said them, I hope to see you smiling and satisfied at heart.

Some of my songs are funny and danceable; some are ardent or tender or reflective. It's always surprised me a little that so many people across the U.S., in England and Australia want to record and perform these songs that feel so very particular to me. But the more personal my writing becomes, the more people share my point of view, and that is deeply gratifying."

My birthday: October 29 (Scorpio, Leo rising: good for show business--and a mane like a a lioness!)

A few of my faves: hand-knit clothing; 1930's movies; lamb chops braised in Irish hard cider; making ice cream; good capers and anchovies; flea markets; cookbooks, old and new; Greek and Macedonian Halvah (sorry, Joyva); Double Glouscester Cheddar cheese with chives; my extensive collection of antique "Please Write" postcards

I am knocked out by: “The Clancy Brothers And Tommy Makem In Person At Carnegie Hall” newly reissued 2 CD set (1963); The John Henrys new "Sweet As The Grain" Roots Rock CD; Judy Collins's moving autogiography "Singing Lessons"; Wendy Waldman, "'cause you know that singing is believing"; "Sinatra With Sextet in Paris" (live recording); The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" CDs (both studio and live versions); Great Big Sea, a manly, broadshouldered Canadian Trad/Rock band

My guitars:

CF Martin DC 16GTE-Premium (spruce top, mahogany back and sides) (2007)

CF Martin 0028C handmade classical (spruce top, rosewood back and sides) (1972)

CF Martin 0016NY "New Yorker" model, handmade steel string (spruce front, rosewood back and sides) (1969)

CF Martin rosewood ukelele (pre-WWII)

(As you can guess, I'm very brand-loyal!)

I first played a stringed instrument when: My dad brought home an old Stadium ukelele and a book of songs made famous by May Singhi Breen, the Hawaiian Ukelele Queen. I picked up the uke and taught myself to play. I was six years old.

The song that made me want to be a songwriter: "Lazy" by Irving Berlin

Where I belong: behind a guitar; near an ice cream machine; on eBay; wherever people listen to lyrics.
